Data management an expanded focus for University

Supporting research staff and students in the management of their data has been given a boost with the appointment of a data management coordinator.

Sam Searle, who was previously the E-Research Development Coordinator at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, commenced at the beginning of August and will be based in the Library.

Sam has been appointed to help the University improve the way that research data is managed. She will concentrate on raising awareness of data management issues, coordinating access to relevant tools and services, and building researchers’ skills and expertise. This is a collaborative, University-wide role involving many groups, including the Monash eResearch Centre, the Research Office, Information Technology Services, Records and Archives, Monash Research Graduate School and faculties.

In addition to providing a base for Sam, the Library is expanding its involvement in data management in other ways as well, particularly through contact librarians, who will be acting in a liaison role to facilitate researchers’ development of data management plans and access to publication facilities such as the Monash ePress, Monash ARROW repository and other relevant services.

These new and expanded advisory and coordinating services will help researchers to successfully manage their data more effectively.
